Former Bayern Coach Andrea Trinchieri’s Memorable Press Conferences and the Abolition of Mandatory Post-Game Interviews in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga

His press conferences were a show. Former Bayern coach Andrea Trinchieri (55) was in top form, especially after defeats. Sometimes there were angry speeches in the style of football legend Giovanni Trapattoni (84/“What do Strunz allow?!”), sometimes the Italian became philosophical. And if things got too bad, the maestro would send his assistant coach…

But that’s the end of this season of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga. Pablo Laso (55/Spain) is now in charge at Bayern – and the league has now abolished the mandatory press rounds after games!

According to the new statues, both head coaches and players must be available to TV partner Dyn for interviews no later than 15 minutes after the final siren. It goes on to say: “A non-public press conference CAN take place for media representatives no later than 20 minutes after the end of the game.”

So that the journalists can still get statements, they can ask players and coaches and interview them in a so-called mixed zone. The Veolia Towers Hamburg, for example, have been doing this since this season.

The only exception: championship and cup decisions. After that, the press conference remains mandatory!

In football, abolition would be a revolution – in basketball the step was taken for practical reasons.

Interest in trainers’ statements has recently been manageable, especially at small locations with few media representatives. The guest coaches usually reeled off their statement and then had to follow their colleague’s explanations in boredom.

The second reason: Because in the BBL the away team almost always goes home by bus immediately after the game, the press conference (technical jargon “PK”) delayed the departure of the entire team by at least half an hour. Especially since some trainers wanted to change or even shower before the PK!

Last but not least, the elimination of the obligatory press conference also speeds up the work of journalists, who have the editorial deadline breathing down their necks at evening games.

Disadvantage: Players and coaches can avoid critical questions!

This is exactly what happened after Bayern’s 67:77 defeat in Oldenburg on Monday. The Munich team sent supplementary player Nelson Weidemann (24) to Dyn for a mandatory interview – the rest disappeared into the dressing room. It wasn’t until the next morning that the club published a statement from Laso – without the direct emotion and approved by the press department.
