Before the European Championship qualifier against Malta, two players suddenly left the Italian national team. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating illegal betting. A professional from Juventus Turin is also suspected.

Two days before the European Championship qualifier against Malta, European champions Italy sent two players back to their clubs from the training camp in Coverciano. Newscastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolò Zaniolo have left the national team, the national association announced on Thursday.

The two midfielders from the English Premier League were previously questioned by the Turin public prosecutor’s office over allegations of illegal betting. The association said they had been officially informed about their involvement in the investigation. “Regardless of the nature of the acts, the association is convinced that in this situation the two players are not in the necessary condition to fulfill the obligations planned in the next few days,” the association said.

European champions Italy will host Malta in Bari this Saturday (8.45 p.m.) in the European Championship qualifiers and will then play against England in the new edition of the European Championship final next Tuesday (8.45 p.m.) in London.

Juventus professional also targeted for illegal betting

A day earlier it was announced that the Turin public prosecutor’s office was investigating Nicolò Fagioli for online betting on unauthorized websites. The 22-year-old Juventus midfielder himself informed the Italian Football Association (FIGC), which is also investigating the matter, about the case, Armando Simbari, the player’s lawyer, told the Italian news agency LaPresse. If Fagioli is found guilty, he could face a fine and a ban of several years.

Fagioli, who has appeared in six of eight Serie A games this season, “is cooperating with both the judicial and sports authorities with the greatest possible transparency,” Simbari continued. “He actually wants to contribute to the investigation.” The 22-year-old does not play a relevant role in the investigation, the AP news agency reported.
