Manuel Neuer will not be back in goal for FC Bayern this weekend against 1. FSV Mainz. But he is back in training. He is expected to return at the end of the month. Coach Tuchel says they want to approach the whole thing without pressure.

There had been speculation as to whether he might play on Saturday evening. But goalkeeper Manuel Neuer’s comeback at FC Bayern has been postponed. The 37-year-old Munich captain is back in training, coach Thomas Tuchel announced on Friday before the away game at 1. FSV Mainz 05 (6.30 p.m./Sky). This is “sensationally good news” and a “very excellent story”. In Mainz and probably also in the Champions League on Tuesday at Galatasaray Istanbul, substitute Sven Ulreich will still be in goal.

Tuchel reported that this decision had been made together with Neuer the day before. He should get more training sessions after his serious injury. You shouldn’t get “too hectic” or rush into anything, warned Tuchel.

The next home game of the German record champions is on October 28th against Darmstadt 98. But they want to approach this “without pressure,” assured Tuchel. “I am 100 percent convinced that he will return to his highest level.”

Last use dated December 1, 2022

Neuer, the 2014 world champion, played his last game to date in Germany’s early World Cup exit in Qatar on December 1, 2022 against Costa Rica. After the tournament, he broke his tibia and fibula on his right lower leg during a ski tour. He has been working on the comeback ever since.

“I admire the way he did it,” praised Tuchel Neuer, who is working “unwaveringly” on his return. “This is really something very special.” The last time Neuer was in the Munich goal was on November 12, 2022 in a 2-0 away win against FC Schalke 04.

The use of the midfield duo Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka is questionable. “With Jo we have to wait a bit. He trained for the first time yesterday and basically got out of bed for the first time. “It will be very close for Mainz,” said coach Tuchel. The 28-year-old Kimmich left the national soccer team due to an infection. On Thursday he trained again for the first time in Munich.

Goretzka suffered a painful flesh wound on his ankle after the international trip to the USA. “Leon has taken a hit, so it will be a question of how he can tolerate the pain,” said Tuchel. But it looks good.
