Joshua Kimmich was world-class as a right-back, but he has seen himself as a defensive midfielder for years. But in this role he is criticized again. Above all, Kimmich has one shortcoming, says former national player Dietmar Hamann.

It wasn’t that long ago that his role on the pitch was the subject of much debate. Hansi Flick, the national coach who has since been released, tried to turn things around in the international match against Japan at the beginning of September by positioning Joshua Kimmich on the right in the back four – and not in defensive midfield.

Flick’s measure met with widespread support. Record national player Lothar Matthäus, for example, described it as a “sensible solution”. The fact that the game ended up being lost 4-1 and meant the end of Flick as national coach was not due to this one personnel decision.

Now that a successor has been found as national coach in Julian Nagelsmann and the first international matches are coming up soon, Kimmich is once again an issue. And again it’s about his role on the pitch – whether in the national jersey or that of FC Bayern.

“The thing he lacks is discipline”

Dietmar Hamann, who has played 59 international matches for Germany, would like the 28-year-old Kimmich to have more defensive discipline and would not let him take any more corners. “In principle, Kimmich can play this role. “Even in a world-class manner,” Hamann told “Kicker”: “The thing he lacks is discipline. That, in turn, is a matter of attitude, but you can convey that to him.”

He would like someone to help the captain of FC Bayern Munich and tell him that he has until winter to just concentrate on the defensive position. “By the way, this also means that he shouldn’t shoot the corners because that’s exactly where he’s needed as counterattack protection,” said Hamann.

Kimmich is repeatedly criticized by experts for his interpretation of the six position. His club coach Thomas Tuchel had requested access to the position several times. Kimmich sees himself as a six. Just like under Nagelsmann at Bayern, where he was a confidant.

At the weekend, Kimmich gave vent to his frustration after the 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig. He was particularly displeased with the second goal conceded: “We were far too stupid and couldn’t get the game back on our side in the first half.” After all, the record champions turned around after the break and deserved the 2-2 showed “that we are already able to dominate Leipzig”. Still: “It’s just stupid how we concede goals.”
