Once, after the win against Bochum, he had to go, otherwise Thomas Tuchel was at least spared from public visits to Oktoberfest. Nevertheless, the Oktoberfest period also left its mark on the Bayern coach, as it did in almost the entire city. With a scratchy voice and a dry cough, Tuchel appeared on Friday to give his usual press conference two days before the game against Freiburg.
After the game on Sunday evening, the 50-year-old gets a little breather, after all, after three English weeks in a row, the next international break is just around the corner. An extremely unusual one at the same time, which even surprises Tuchel: “Playing against Mexico in America before a European Championship in Germany… I don’t know if that makes sense to me. I also don’t know if anyone can explain it to me so conclusively that I can I completely understand. I don’t know who decided that, but it has been decided.”
Mammoth program for the national players
Next Saturday, the German national team will face the USA in Hartford (Connecticut) at 9 p.m. (CEST, LIVE! on kicker) and will face Mexico in Philadelphia on Wednesday night (2 a.m. CEST, LIVE! on kicker). Five Bayern players are there: Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller. “They come back on Thursday and are on the plane to Mainz on Friday,” says Tuchel angrily. The following Monday they go on to Istanbul before, after a home game against Darmstadt, the away appearances in the cup in Saarbrücken and Dortmund.
And his squad is already struggling. “That’s the end of your endurance. No coach at this level will tell you otherwise,” complains Tuchel. “But we’re always asked about it first, and then everything is decided. Nobody ever asks before we decide something. And they probably know our opinion and don’t want to hear it. That’s why it’s honestly pointless.”
The Champions League, criticizes Bayern’s coach, “at some point will have more games, the European Championship will be expanded, the World Cup will be expanded. The games will be played thousands of kilometers away from each other. You won’t find a club manager or a coach who thinks that’s good. You You won’t find a player who will tell you: ‘Yes, I can really reach my performance limit with the schedule.’ But okay, that’s how it is and we’re trying to make the best of it.”
