Europa League: LASK suffers bitter defeat in Belgium

Moses Usor gave the Athletes the lead with his first goal of the season after a Stojkovic cross (24th). Before and after, Robert Zulj and Marin Ljubicic missed chances to score more goals. After the break only the Belgian league leaders played, but remained too harmless for the time being. In the end, Cameron Puertas equalized for the hosts with a penalty after a Luckeneder foul (84th), before Christian Burgess headed a free-kick cross in the 94th minute.

In the parallel game, Group E favorite Liverpool won against Toulouse 5-1 and has a maximum of nine points. St. Gilloise and the French are behind with four points each. In two weeks (November 9th, 6:45 p.m., live on ORF1) there will be the “second leg” in the Arena in Linz, before the highlight of this fall awaits the athletes three weeks later – the guest appearance in Liverpool.

“Very, very bitter”

But first the last minute defeat has to be dealt with. “If you concede a goal at the end, it’s really, really bitter. I was happy with the first half, but we lost track in the second half,” said LASK coach Thomas Sageder in an ORF interview. “I can’t blame the boys, but we didn’t put as much pressure on the ball. Then you saw the strength of Saint-Gilloise. We know that we have strong opponents in our group. We did well, but of course we would have liked to get something from here.”

After the 1-0 win against Austria’s series champions Salzburg, the Linzers came to Belgium with a lot of self-confidence, where the leaders of the Jupiler Pro League also had a team with a big chest that recently celebrated five league wins in a row. “We want to play forward boldly, aggressively and courageously,” said Sageder before the game. The coach only changed the starting eleven in one position compared to the Salzburg coup. In defense, Felix Luckeneder came into the team instead of the injured Andres Andrade. The Belgians with German coach Alexander Blessin had to do without Swedish striker Gustaf Nilsson.

Zulj misses the first top chance

The people from Linz, who had arrived late in Belgium the day before, did not play at the regular home of St. Gilloise. Because the Stade Joseph Marien only has 8,000 seats and does not meet the requirements of UEFA competitions. That’s why they played in the 20,000-person stadium of league rivals Anderlecht.

Good chance for LASK (13th minute)

Zulj’s attempt is cleared in front of the line.

In the Lotto Park, spectators saw a very wide spectrum of colors. As usual, the pitch was green, the home team traditionally in blue and yellow and LASK in pink, which the hard core fans rejected. The hosts found their first chance, but goalkeeper Tobias Lawal was there in time (6th). LASK then made its first claims in the person of its key player Zulj, but his shot went over the Belgian goal (9th).

What is possible for the ÖFB clubs in the group phase?

Four minutes later, the former Germany legionnaire had the first great chance of the game. After a long pass from Philipp Ziereis, Marin Ljubicic played the ball back to Zulj, who didn’t get the ball past the goalie in the best possible way, but brought it to the goal. The ball would have found its way into the goal if Kevin Mac Allister hadn’t still been “at home” and cleared in front of the line (13th).

Usor puts LASK in the lead

The LASK continued where it left off in Salzburg. The opponent was put under pressure, balls were won, second balls were won and the goal was sought. The Linz team took the lead, which was anything but undeserved. Sascha Horvath fought back a lost ball on the left side, the ball moved to the right side, where Filip Stojkovic sent the cross into the penalty area, and even Usor couldn’t miss this chance. It was the first goal of the season for the 21-year-old Nigerian.

Four minutes later, the hosts celebrated after the quick Kevin Rodriguez left Ziereis standing in the running duel and gave Lawal no chance with a technically beautiful finish (28th). But the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) rightly intervened and took the goal back because Lazare illegally brought down Amani Horvath in the process. Loic Lapoussin then tested Lawal (40th), but Ljubicic missed the much better chance after good preparatory work by George Bello alone in front of goalie Anthony Moris (45th).

Hosts take control of the game

For Bello the game was over at half time. Despite his very good performance, Sageder didn’t want to risk anything and took the left-footer off the pitch, who had been given a yellow card. Thomas Goiginger came into the game in his place, Usor moved back one on the left in the 3-4-3.

LASK started the second half well and found further chances. Ljubicic, who has been finding it difficult to score goals for some time, put a header past Stojkovic’s cross (47′). After that, a Horvath cross caused danger, but Moris was there. Because the efficiency that is so essential, especially on the European stage, was missing, LASK got into trouble. The Belgians took more and more control and found half chances, Rodriguez missed the equalizer with a header (57th), Cameron Puertas stumbled and Rodriguez (66th) and Koki Machida (75th) failed.

St. Gilloise turns the game in the finish

LASK was unable to relieve the pressure after the break and St. Gilloise was able to play in the opponent’s half until the athletes made a mistake. Luckeneder slipped in the penalty area and came too late against Lapoussin. Karaoglan had no choice and decided on a penalty, which Puertas safely converted (84′).

LASK then recovered and seemed to take the deserved point from Belgium, but Maksym Talovierov committed another foul just outside the box. Puertas took the free kick and Burgess headed home the win in the 94th minute.
