Being in the world is not child’s play: Proloco, Municipality and Region of Lombardy teach young people how to defend themselves. On Tuesday 24 October, in the primary school gym in Piazzale Gianola, for the second consecutive year the free “Personal Defense Education” course will be held. The particularity is the recipients: minors aged between 13 and 17. The objective is to react in the event of an attack, acquire the ability to understand a dangerous situation at the outset and get out of it without even needing a physical confrontation. There will be 10 lessons, lasting one hour, from 5pm to 6pm on Tuesday. The teacher is Anna Baj from Tradate, coach and school sports educator, third Dan black belt in karate, personal defense instructor. She will explain the techniques of the Mga, Global Self-defense Method, and of the Fijlkam, Italian Judo, Karate and Martial Arts Federation. «Fortunately we don’t have a bullying problem in our area, but we think it is useful to provide children with useful tools to react in case of danger – explains Michela Esposito, councilor for Culture and Events – It was the parents who asked us after taking part in a course similar for adults”. But what do young people learn during lessons? «They are theoretical and practical, because the topic is not just woodpeckers. The participants are also prepared psychologically.”
Last year the instructor gave the 8 participants an apparently banal indication: to already have the keys to the scooter in hand when entering the car park. “This is to avoid being distracted and perhaps at that moment an intruder approaches from behind.” It is the second year that associations, the Municipality and the Region have joined forces with projects aimed at Under 18s. «As an Administration we participated in the regional call “Let’s stay together”, aimed at supporting initiatives for children aged 0 to 17». The process was followed in particular by the head of Social Services Laura Zannin, by the councilor for Social Services Daniela Grimoldi and by the president of the Proloco Enrica Moltrasio.
