Eibar and the world of rugby said goodbye to Urtzi Abantzabalegi this Thursday in an emotional ceremony held in an Errebal square full of people. With the stands full and with people outside the venue, they wanted to accompany the family in such a difficult moment. The former pillar of Eibar Rugby, Getxo, Ordizia, among others, and the Euskadi national team, died last Monday in a work accident in Abadiño, causing deep sorrow in the armory city. The event was attended by a large representation of Ordizia and Getxo, as well as Eibar Rugby, among others. The one who was his coach at Ordizia and with whom he won two Copas del Rey in Palencia and Santander, Axio Araña, attended, and very excitedly assured that Urtzi “was a person who would never leave you alone.” The mayor of Eibar, Jon Iraola, also added to the pain of the family and friends.

All the references speak of his big heart, his open, happy and dedicated disposition. The event started with a song by Patxo eta Peio and a txalaparte. Afterwards, a childhood classmate of hers at the Eibar ikastola, Maite Arroitajauregi, performed a song, in addition to remembering her steps in the ‘gela’. A group of three friends covered the song ‘Adiós, Reina Mia’ by Eskorbuto, Urtzi’s favorite musical band. Unax Blanco and Alfredo Cobo, Eibar Rugby teammates and friends, relived moments shared with Urtzi and made reference to the fact that he will always be present in the ‘third times’. In fact, representatives and players from Eibar Rugby, Ordizia and Getxo wore a t-shirt in his memory. In addition, his brother-in-law and two of his cousins also dedicated some nice words to the memory of the once powerful pilier.

“He was a person who would never leave you alone,” highlights Araña, the coach with whom Urtzi won two Copas del Rey.

The bertsolari Mikel Arrillaga dedicated some verses to his wife, family and Urtzi’s life, before the Ordizia players, very excited, sang one of their own. The event concluded with an aurresku.

This weekend the first matches will be played without Urtzi. This Saturday in the match that Ordizia will play in Altamira against Cisneros, there will be a small tribute in the previous matches. For its part, Eibar Rugby will also take into consideration the figure of Abanzabalegi before the clash.
