Edwin van der Sar Receives €500,000 Payment Upon Departure from Ajax

Edwin van der Sar received an amount of 500,000 euros after his departure from Ajax. The general manager left Ajax this calendar year and was entitled to a severance payment of €300,000 and received a bonus of €200,000.

This is evident from Ajax’s annual figures. The bonus that Van der Sar received was related to the previously agreed goals that were achieved in the areas of budgeting, overall coordination and communication. The sporting achievements also partly played a role in that amount, despite the fact that they were considerably less in Van der Sar’s final year. He previously collected an amount of 50,000 euros for the services provided. The bonuses of €200,000 were for the past season, in which the former goalkeeper was still fully involved.

The fact that a termination fee of no less than €300,000 is also paid is quite remarkable, because Van der Sar himself decided to leave the Johan Cruijff Arena at the end of May. “In connection with the termination of Van der Sar’s employment, a settlement agreement was agreed, with a termination payment of 300,000 euros,” Ajax writes in the annual report about that sum.

The figures for Amsterdam residents have also been very positive. Last weekend, the people of Amsterdam reported that they had booked a net profit of 39 million euros for the 2022/2023 financial year. They owe this largely to a number of major outgoing transfers in the summer of 2022. Van der Sar is currently being succeeded on an interim basis by Jan van Halst, but Alex Kroes will take over from March next calendar year.

Big bonuses for other directors
By the way, the bonuses were not just for Van der Sar: the other directors also received a generous payout due to Ajax’s disappointing third place in the Eredivisie. Menno Geelen raised a total of 167,500 euros, while financial director Susan Lenderink was able to add 142,500 euros. Chief Sports Officer Maurits Hendriks – who is currently the subject of much criticism – also received an additional 100,000 euros of 112,813 euros.
