Eden Hazard Receives Phone Call from French President Macron and Shares Mischievous Banter

Last week, Eden Hazard retired as a professional footballer during a gala match in Calais. Just before that match, the 32-year-old received a phone call from none other than Emmanuel Macron, the French president. Quite an honor, although Macron did take a jab at Hazard – for laughs, of course.

“Good evening Mr. President,” Hazard answers the phone when Macron calls. But Hazard wouldn’t be Hazard if he didn’t speak to the French president in the same way he would to his neighbor. When Macron asks how Hazard is doing, he answers with a mischievous smile. “Ça va, like a young retiree!”

Although he quickly stops laughing when Macron speaks again. “I’m not going to lie, Eden. The last time I saw you on a field, I really wanted you to play poorly. That was at the World Cup in 2018 against France,” Macron talks about the semi-final at the World Cup in Russia, where the Belgians lost 1-0 after a frustrating match. A painful memory for every Belgian football fan, but Hazard remembers something else from that match. “We may have lost, but I played well then, didn’t I!”
