Dutch Cyclist Jeffrey Hoogland Sets New World Record for Kilometer Time Trial

Jeffrey Hoogland did it.

The Dutchman has managed to set the world record for the kilometer time trial. On the high cycling track of Aguascalientes, Mexico, the 30-year-old Dutchman achieved a time of 55.433 seconds after four laps.

The old record (56.303) was held by the Frenchman François Pervis and was held on the same track in 2013.

Hoogland was already four-time world champion in the non-Olympic event and saw the record attempt as a great challenge and an addition to his preparation for the Paris Olympic Games. There he defends the team sprint title with Harrie Lavreysen and Roy van den Berg.

Hoogland already held the world record on lowland courses with 57.813. He rode that time in February during the European Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland. At altitude, air resistance is lower, which offers the opportunity for even better times.

Hoogland still has the track available on Wednesday. He may then try to improve the world record for the 200 meters with a so-called flying start.
