Irene Schouten won the 3,000 meters at the World Cup qualifying tournament in Heerenveen on Saturday. Elisa Dul surprised the audience with a World Cup ticket, although she had to fear disqualification. Femke Kok confirmed her favorite status in the first 500 meters.

The 31-year-old Schouten recorded 3.55.89 in the 3 kilometers in Thialf. This made the three-time Olympic champion 2.19 seconds faster than Marijke Groenewoud.

Dul seemed to be the surprise in the 3,000 meters in Thialf with the third fastest time (4:00.56), but Schouten’s teammate was disqualified for crossing a line during her race. Dul protested, after which the decision was reversed. “An exceptional case,” the referee said about reversing the disqualification.

That was bad news for Rijpma-de Jong, because she moved up to fifth place. The former world champion at this distance actually fell one tenth short of qualifying for the first World Cups with the sixth fastest time (4.02.41).

‘This gives me goosebumps’

When Rijpma-de Jong heard after her race that Dul was disqualified, she reacted with surprise. “This gives me goosebumps. I just didn’t deserve to reach the World Cup.”

Joy Beune (third in 4.01.69) and Sanne in ‘t Hof (fourth in 4.02.32) also managed to qualify. Esther Kiel, who surprised on Friday with a place in the 1,500 meters, fell just short with sixth place.

The World Cup season kicks off on November 10 in Obihiro, Japan. A week later the skaters will be in action in Beijing.
