Dries Devenyns: Riding the Gran Piemonte at 40, Rejecting Science in Professional Cycling

Dries Devenyns is still riding the Gran Piemonte today. Then his professional career is completely over at the age of 40.

Dries Devenyns spent seventeen years as a servant in the platoon. He also has a diploma in physical education.

Everything in terms of training seems like a logical step, but if there is one person who is against a lot of science, it is Devenyns.

“Science and training theory… That often bothers me. I think that trainers and nutritionists are given too much power. Or let me put it this way: riders let their self-confidence depend far too much on that,” he tells Het Nieuwsblad.

For Devenyns it can all be a bit more natural. “The idea exists: I can only be good if I have done everything exactly as they tell me. I believe in the healthy, happy athlete who maintains weight, trains hard and gets enough rest. Not the obsessive athlete who opens his phone first thing in the morning and reads everything he has to do.”
