Dominic Thiem has qualified for the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy. The 2020 US Open champion clearly defeated the Australian Christopher O’Connell in two sets 6:4, 6:3 in the second and final round of the preliminary round with an appealing performance. The Lichtenwörther native’s last appearance at the hard court indoor tournament in the French capital was in 2019, when he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 16. Thiem achieved his best result in 2018, when it only ended in the semifinals against Karen Khachanov.
O’Connell, who was seeded twelve in the qualification, had a very unpleasant serve, but the Lower Austrian was clearly superior in terms of play. Thiem’s opening opponent in the first round of the last Masters 1000 tournament of the year has already been determined: the current world number 99. has to deal with the Swiss old master Stan Wawrinka. Head-to-head between the two, the score is 3-1 for the Swiss, although the last duel dates back to 2017. In 2014, Wawrinka defeated Thiem 6:4, 7:6 (6) in the second round of the Rolex Paris Masters.
Sebastian Ofner didn’t make it into the main field. After his first round victory over local hero Terence Atmane, the Styrian lost against the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschlup, who was seeded 14th in the preliminary round, 6:7 (7), 2:6. Ofner was able to fight his way back into the match after a false start in the first round, but in the end the two-time Munich finalist was unstoppable for Austria’s number one.
