Discussing the Dutch National Team’s Penalty Woes After Weghorst Miss

failed to hurt Greece from the spot on Monday evening in the first half. The Hoffenheim striker was allowed to shoot from eleven meters, but produced a particularly weak penalty. This miss provided food for discussion among the AD Football podcast. Mikos Gouka sees a potential new penalty taker for the Dutch team.

“Teun Koopmeiners could be a specialist, but the question is of course whether he will play. In addition, I have seen Memphis take very bad penalties, but also very good ones,” says Gouka Algemeen Dagblad. “A penalty is simply a specialism. I think that Tijjani Reijnders, for example, should also be able to do it, because he also has a very good kick. But he has just completed his third international match,” the journalist continues.

The discussion was sparked by Weghorst’s miss. Statistically speaking, the tall striker does not score well when it comes to taking penalties. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar also showed that the Dutch national team had difficulty taking penalties. Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis (player with very good penalty statistics) did not score in the penalty shootout against Argentina.

“In the run-up to the European Championship, if you sit together for a few weeks, you can manage this problem. That will be fine,” Gouka thinks. Presenter Etienne Verhoeff sees that not only penalties are a problem for the Dutch team. “We don’t really have a specialist for dead moments either.” Gouka: “Maybe Joey Veerman, but he won’t play much.”
