Youssoufa Moukoko is having a tough time at Borussia Dortmund. He’s just a replacement there on offense. He is now impressing in a special game for the German U21 team. His coach then has special advice for the young star.

Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko also justified his convincing performances in the U21 national team with the trust of coach Antonio Di Salvo.

“That’s very good for me. In the end you can see that I’m in the right place. In the end, it’s also about trust. The coach trusts me and I will give that back,” said the 18-year-old after the 3-2 (1-1) win against Bulgaria in Sofia last Friday. Moukoko led the German Football Association (DFB) selection to their next victory in the European Championship qualification with three goals (40th/49th/69th minute).

The top talent thus increased his goal quota in the U21 to eleven goals in nine games. Moukoko had already scored twice in the 3-0 win at the start of the European Championship qualification in Kosovo. “The boys are always looking for me in the penalty area, I get the balls I need. The striker has to score the goals, I did that today,” said Moukoko at ProSieben Maxx. “When I’m in the penalty area – I know where the goal is.”

At BVB under coach Edin Terzic, Moukoko has only made six substitute appearances across all competitions this season, and he has not yet played a goal role in the Bundesliga. “I think that I work no differently than Edin at the club,” said Di Salvo. “I talk to Mouki a lot, we practice qualifications, we just have a good bond.”

“Privilege to play for U21”

The U21 coach referred to the competitive situation in Dortmund, where there are top-class alternatives in the squad in the attack center in national players Niclas Füllkrug and Sébastien Haller.

“That’s why he’s playing less at the moment,” said Di Salvo. “I told him to make the most of his time here and that it was a privilege to play for the U21s. The goal rate shows that he feels extremely comfortable here and helps us with the goals.”

“He’s only been in club football so far” – Nagelsmann’s debut with the national team

On the national team’s trip to the USA, captain Ilkay Gündogan and Jonas Hofmann talk about their first impressions of the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann. One of the two has known him since he was a teenager, the other had only spoken to him on the phone before.

The new national coach Julian Nagelsmann did not nominate Moukoko for the senior national team’s current trip to the USA. The Dortmund player should recommend himself for higher tasks with the U21. The same applies to BVB professional Karim Adeyemi, who also played for the U21s from the start against Bulgaria.

The U21s continue in November with home games against Estonia and Poland. The game in Israel scheduled for next Tuesday was postponed after the attack by the Islamist Hamas. It is still unclear when it will be rescheduled. Only the first group winner is guaranteed to qualify for the tournament next year in Slovakia
