There is no joint processing of the World Cup debacle. Instead, the gap between Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and the DFB has become deeper. The association is now reacting to the national coach’s Instagram post. The words leave little room for interpretation.

The German Football Association (DFB) reacted extremely distancedly to the Instagram post by women’s national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. When asked whether the association was currently in discussions with the 55-year-old, a spokeswoman responded to a dpa query on Wednesday: “Currently, communication is primarily taking place via Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s legal representation.”

The national coach has now recovered and announced on Tuesday via social networks that she was internally coming to terms with the early World Cup failure. However, the DFB’s reaction is revealing. If the association, your employer, communicates primarily with your lawyers and can no longer communicate personally and also says this publicly, something is going very wrong. It’s hard to imagine that the situation can be saved given the mood of crisis that has been simmering for weeks and the increasing criticism from players.

The DFB continued on Wednesday: “We would like to make it clear that Martina Voss-Tecklenburg has informed us that she will only be available for a personal interview after her vacation after a period of reflection. Of course we respected this and planned for it. The DFB is therefore aiming for a joint discussion soon after Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s vacation ends. We do not want to and will not anticipate this.” Currently, the Nations League and the associated Olympic qualification, which is to be achieved under interim coach Horst Hrubesch, have the “highest priority”. The national team will play against Wales on Friday.

The national player had criticized

The DFB had previously confirmed on Sunday that the coach, who was taking a break, was no longer on sick leave and was on vacation. “I can happily announce that, thanks to the support of very experienced and qualified doctors and the support of my family and circle of friends, I am now almost healthy and fit for action again,” wrote Voss-Tecklenburg. “I’m obviously very happy about that, as the last few months haven’t been easy for me.”

Recently, however, several national players had also vented their anger. After it became public that Voss-Tecklenburg also gave two lectures during her vacation, Lena Oberdorf was surprised. “It obviously gives me a few question marks,” said the 21-year-old from VfL Wolfsburg: “I would have wished for something different. That you say: OK, let’s first clarify what happened at the World Cup.”

From their point of view, a relaxing vacation would have been possible even after coming to terms with the World Cup.
