Deniz Aytekin Honored with German Football Culture Prize for Memorable Comment about Jamal Musiala

With his confident way of directing the game, Deniz Aytekin has long since become an authority in German refereeing in the Bundesliga.

Now the referee even wins a prize, which, however, only indirectly has to do with his performance as a referee.

The referee from TSV Altenberg prevailed with his statement about Jamal Musiala at the gala for the 2023 German Football Culture Prize in Nuremberg.

“When the Musiala picks up and takes 60 to 70 from you at 80 meters, you think about your life differently,” Aytekin said to Thomas Müller during Munich’s 6-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the opening game of last season.

In the final round of voting, the audience voted for Aytekin’s saying and thus against a banner from Freiburg fans marking the end of striker Nils Petersen’s career. It read: “Nobody is bigger than the club. But you were damn close.”

A total of around 160 citations were submitted, eleven of which were nominated. The prize, which has been awarded by the academy since 2006, is endowed with 5,000 euros for a charitable purpose.
