The new national coach gets started in the USA: Team meetings took place on Tuesday, then in the afternoon Julian Nagelsmann (36) was on the pitch for the first time as DFB coach and immediately put his foot down.
Captain Ilkay Gündogan (32) did not know Nagelsmann personally before – and was immediately amazed by a very special Nagelsmann trait!

Gündogan laughs: “I was surprised that he was so big! I never really got to know him before and I didn’t notice on TV that he was that big. He has a really good stature.” Nagelsmann is 1.90 meters tall, Gündogan is 1.80 meters …
Nagelsmann also makes a good first impression in other ways. Gündogan: “We have now had two meetings, this morning and this afternoon before training. There were relatively clear statements about principles that we want to have in our game. I think he wants to try to get the most out of the little time we have.”

Gündogan was also the first player that Nagelsmann called after his appointment as national coach: “It was nice, I even missed the first call because I was with my little one, so it was a little later. He just told me that there are certainly a lot of things to discuss, but that we will do it in person. But he wanted to let me know that I remained his captain because I had his introduction the next morning and would probably be asked about it. I thought that was great.”
There was also a telephone conversation with ex-national coach Hansi Flick (58), with whom Gündogan had a very good relationship: “I spoke to Hansi again briefly on the phone. I called him a few days after the international break was over. We are all professionals, we know how the business works. We know that we part ways, sometimes by our own hands, sometimes because we can’t influence it. But it’s now a new task for a new national coach and I believe it can be really good.”
Hopefully Nagelsmann will also amaze German football fans like his DFB captain…
