Darts World Grand Prix: Eight legs in a row – Gerwyn Price overwhelms Martin Schindler

John Part once again knew everything beforehand. The former PDC darts world champion and long-time British expert from Sky Sports stepped up to the microphone on the quarter-final evening of the World Grand Prix before the first match and predicted: “If Martin Schindler doesn’t win the first set, he’ll go under the wheels “Former world champion and TV expert John Part had predicted, “Gerwyn Price will then be of a different caliber than Stephen Bunting.”

And that’s exactly how it happened. After Schindler missed five darts for the early break on double 11 and missed a chance on the doubles in the second leg, Price turned up the heat. Aided by the German’s problems at check-in, the Welshman won leg after leg.

At the World Grand Prix, the Double-In/Double-Out mode is played, which means that a double field must be hit not only at the end but also at the beginning of each leg in order to be able to score points. And then Price was usually already running away before the German had even hit the double field.

Extraordinary connection

When Schindler checked with the score at 0:2 after sets and legs to make it 1:2, all that was left for “The Wall” was sarcastic cheers. Shortly afterwards, Price ended the one-sided match. “Martin was far away from his game, but I was able to stay focused. Then something like this happens,” said Price, who was even a little annoyed at the end for having given up another leg.

Price and Smith with a clean slate

While the “Iceman” will now face world champion Michael Smith, who also made it through the tournament without losing a set, in the semi-finals on Saturday, Schindler can also look back on a successful week in Leicester.

He was the first German in the history of the tournament to reach the quarter-finals, and he himself also recognizes a development: “It took me four attempts to win the World Cup, and here I go straight to the quarter-finals the second time,” he said an interview with Sky Sports.

On Monday, Martin Schindler reached the round of 16 of the World Grand Prix for the first time in his career with a 2:1 (3:2, 2:3, 3:1) over old champion Raymond van Barneveld. “An important victory,” the 27-year-old wrote afterwards on his Facebook page.

And it shouldn’t be the last. Just two days later, he defeated Stephen Bunting 3:2 (0:3, 3:1, 3:1, 2:3, 3:1) and became the first German in the history of the tournament to reach the quarterfinals. Ber Price is not Bunting – as Part had already expected.

The second German was already eliminated at the start. Gabriel Clemens had no chance at 0:2 (1:3, 1:3) against a resurgent two-time world champion Peter Wright. In doing so, Schindler also shortened the gap in the world rankings to his friend and compatriot. In the Order of Merit the two are separated by just 17,500 pounds.
