D’Angelo Russell Acknowledges Defensive Weakness, Aims to Improve for Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers point guard, D’Angelo Russell, stands out for his scoring vocation, his outside shot and his passing ability. On the contrary, his understated defensive performance has been the focus of the vast majority of criticism he has received throughout his career.

The player himself is aware of his limitations on this side of the court, so he is working to modify this tendency so as not to represent a weakness for his team.

“I guess last year they found a way to get me off the field by not playing well on defense,” Russell said, according to the outlet. The Athletic. «So I want to eliminate that. Don’t give them a reason not to be on the court. I will try to be as dangerous as possible in attack without becoming a problem in defense. That’s what I’m working on and what I will work on all season to maintain good habits.”

Interestingly, Russell cited Derrick White as a role model. The Lakers guard praised his Celtics namesake for making “all those winning decisions on the court,” even if he doesn’t necessarily take credit for them. Thus, Russell acknowledged that he would like to become a profile similar to White.

“I saw it and it really surprised me,” White said of D’Angelo’s words. «He is an All-Star who has done many great things in this league. He has a lot of talent. So it’s great to be recognized in that way, especially from a guy who has done as much in this league as he has.
