Dallas Mavericks (0-1) – Minnesota Timberwolves (1-0) 99:111 (BOXSCORE)

Head coach Jason Kidd started with the two first-round picks from this year’s draft, Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper. The rookies completed the lineup with superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving as well as Grant Williams. With the exception of Doncic, all Mavericks lost in a desolate first quarter: The T-Wolves won the first period of the game 37:19.

Center Lively, the No. 12 pick in the draft, had two points (1/2), five rebounds and a block in 15 minutes of playing time, Prosper (24th pick) missed his three attempts from the field, including two from downtown, and got one point in 18 minutes. The Mavs’ top scorer was Luka Doncic, who recorded 25 points (8/14, 3/8 three-pointers) and 5 rebounds in 17 minutes. Irving remained completely pale with two points each (1/6), assists and turnovers in 14 minutes. Maxi Kleber was allowed to play for eight minutes, scored once from the field and got a rebound.

“Today there were two rookies who got to start against a playoff team and I think they did well,” said head coach Jason Kidd after the game. “Dereck did some good things against Gobert and Towns and O-Max had good shots that just didn’t fall.”

For the Timberwolves, who rested All Star Anthony Edwards with ankle problems, Karl-Anthony Towns was the best scorer with 20 points in 17 minutes. Naz Reid had 17 points.
