Cycle to NEC: Initiative Encourages Fans to Bike to the Goffert Stadium

Almost seventy percent of NEC season ticket holders live within a radius of ten kilometers from the Goffert Stadium. Still, many fans from the city and surrounding areas choose to travel to the stadium by car. With the ‘Cycle to NEC’ initiative, the club calls on supporters to come to the stadium by bike. The initiative is made possible by Unibet.

The Goffert Stadium is centrally located in Nijmegen and within cycling distance of Nijmegen Central Station. Due to limited parking for bicycles, supporters often choose the car as the first means of transport to the stadium. To give supporters a boost, NEC will reward cycling NEC members. The sustainable initiative ‘Cycle to NEC’ will be launched at NEC’s home match against Almere City FC on Saturday, October 21 and will be further rolled out later in the season.

Especially for ‘Take your bike to the NEC’, the Nijmegen club has set up a temporary guarded bicycle shed near the Hazenkampstand, where you can park your bicycle. Participants will be rewarded with a saddle cover and a real bicycle street will be created to put the cycling supporter in the spotlight.

Parking around the Goffert Stadium has been an issue for NEC for years. The club would like to create more parking space for bicycles, but is dependent on the possibilities in the Goffert Park. With the pilot, NEC is trying to expose the cycling problem and, together with the Municipality of Nijmegen, look at structural solutions in the future.

The initiative is made possible by Unibet. Through Unibet Impact, the online sports betting provider supports projects in the field of responsible gaming, preventing match fixing and promoting Dutch sports and sports culture.
