SANTO DOMINGO,-Cuban Yasiel Puig’s main mission is to put up the numbers to win the championship and be in the Caribbean Series in Miami.

“First there are the Stars, putting up the necessary numbers for the championship and the Caribbean Series, then later there is the possibility of returning to the Major Leagues.”

Puig, 32 years old and born in Cienfuegos, has had legal problems in his career so he hopes to have a new beginning.

“I am taking advantage of this opportunity that the Stars gave me and helping the national championship and then going for the Caribbean Series in Miami,” Puig told Luis Tomás Rae for Baseball 360 on Channel 8 of Telecable Puerto Plata.

Puig played in South Korea last season with the Kiwoon Heroes and has experience in Lidom with the Toros del Este (2020-21 and 21-22).

“There is a good battle here with players from different countries and those from the Dominican Major Leagues like Fernando Tatis Jr, who join in December.”

The passage of “Caballo Loco” to the Eastern Stars is a strategic step towards his goal of returning to the MLB or other professional leagues.

“I was born to play baseball,” Puig said in a brief statement published on his social network where he thanked the Stars for the opportunity and proclaimed that his goal was to give the club a championship. “I have it in my blood, it’s in every breath of air I breathe.”

In his seven years of experience in the Majors he has an average of .277/.348/.475 with 132 home runs and 415 RBIs in 861 games.

Puig, who despite his controversial way of playing baseball, has undeniable talent. He played for the Elefantes de Cienfuegos (2008-09 and 10-11) and the Indios de Mayagüez (2012-13).

This winter could be his last opportunity to play in an important league such as the Dominican League, for which he said he is prepared mentally, physically and spiritually.

He is wearing the number 33 (His age), as a thank you to God for giving him a new opportunity to return to the field and “give the fans the baseball they deserve to enjoy.”

He pleaded guilty last year to lying to U.S. federal authorities in an investigation related to illegal gambling.
