Cuba Shines at 2023 Pan American Games with Four Gold Medals, Three in Judo

Cuba had its best day this Monday at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, adding four gold medals, three in Judo and one in Table Tennis.

The first title of the date was won by Iván Silva in the 90 kilograms by beating Brazilian Raúl Macedo in the final.

For her part, in the Over 78 kilo Division, Idalis Ortiz took her fourth Pan American Gold by defeating the Colombian Briggitte Carabalí in the final.

The third title came through Andy Granda who beat local Chilean Francisco Solís in the final.

The fourth Gold came in Table Tennis, when the Mixed Doubles of Daniela Fonseca and Jorge Moisés Campos achieved the golden metal with a resounding victory in the final against Brazil.

Since 1987, Cuba had not won a gold medal in this sport at the Pan American Games.

For its part, Cuba’s discreet performance in team sports continued.

The men’s Volleyball beat Mexico 3-2 after being 1-2 sets down, the Handball fell to Uruguay 25-24, the men’s Water Polo was beaten 20-4 by Argentina, while the Field Hockey fell 1-0 against to Chile and was left out of the medal dispute.

Discreet performance by Athletics that left without medals on the first date of the sport, when most countries did not send their main figures and in many cases not even their second ones.

Cuba was confirmed in the medal table in sixth position and this Tuesday it will compete among other sports in Athletics, Table Tennis, Volleyball and the mixed team final in Judo.
