Countdown to Euro 2024: Qualification Update and Play-off Preview

There are 240 days left until the ball rolls at the Allianz Arena in Munich kicking off Euro 2024. June 14 is far away… but we are already beginning to see what the final phase will be like on the horizon.

A date that is taking shape little by little as the classification enters its final stretch. There is still a double day (November 15-21) and the play-off (March 21-26) next yearbut there are already nine countries that have bought their ticket for the Euro.

Teams qualified for Euro 2024

Next to the hosts Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Turkey, Austria and England They will be in the tournament and in the pots of the draw that will be held on December 2 in Hamburg. However, there is still much to decide in a qualifying phase that has several asterisks beyond the disqualification of Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.

Israel, Belgium-Sweden…

The war with Hamas has caused Israel to postpone its matches this window against Kosovo and Switzerland. The clash against the Swiss has been moved to November (15) along with those that have to play against Romania (18) and Andorra (21). The duel against Kosovo has no date… nor is it known if they will be able to play or not then. A fact that conditions the entire group I, with Romania (first with 16) and Switzerland (second with 15) in direct access positions to the Euro.

A calendar problem for UEFA, which must also determine when the second half of the Belgium-Sweden match will be played (1-1 at half-time), suspended due to the terrorist attack that left two dead in Brussels. Two cases to be resolved in a classification that is being defined.

How are the groups for EURO 2024 qualification?

A (Spain and Scotland) and F (Belgium and Austria) already have their two direct qualifiers. From there, there is ‘tomato’. In group B, France is in Germany and the Netherlands (second) and Greece (third) will ‘fight’ for that second place. The ‘Oranje’ is ahead of the Hellenes by winning their particular confrontation. If Koeman’s men beat the Republic of Ireland in Amsterdam in November they will be in the Euros. There’s no more.

England, fixed on C… and Italy in danger. The English beat La Azzurra and are already in. And be careful because on the last day there is a Ukraine-Italy match that could condemn the Italians to the play-offs in favor of the Ukrainians.

In group D, Türkiye has qualified. Wales is second ahead of Modric’s Croatia by surpassing them in their direct duel. The ‘dragons’ depend on themselves: if they win in Armenia and Turkey in Cardiff they will go to Germany. But if they fail, the Croats could pass them if they score more points than them in Latvia and against Armenia in Zagreb.

Group E is very open. Albania (first with 13 points) and Czech Republic (second with 12) would now go directly to the Euro. But Poland (third with 10) and Moldova (fourth with 9) are involved in the ‘ointment’. The direct duels in November will be key.

In Group G and H the swords are still high. In the G Hungary is close to getting involved but it is not guaranteed, as it depends on its last match against Montenegro (0-0 in the first leg). Serbia is second.

In H, Kazakhstan still has a chance to enter directly despite being third. There will be an exciting double day with Slovenia and Denmark as first and second, respectively.

In the J, with Portugal already classified, Slovakia has it in its hand by taking five points from Luxembourg with two days remaining. It’s worth one point (the Luxembourgers also have a winner) to get into the final phase. However, it doesn’t all end here. Then the playoff melon will open.

How the play-off works to qualify for the 2024 European Championship

You can reach the final phase of the Euro Cup through the play-offs. There will be twelve teams that will fight for the three places that are awarded in this all or nothing. There are three routes that are accessed by the teams that have won Leagues A, B and C of the last Nations League or, failing that, those with the best ranking.

With two days left, the three routes would be made up of:

Route A: Croatia, Italy, Poland, EstoniaRoute B: Israel, Bosnia, Finland, UkraineRuth C: Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg

From each route comes a team that will play in the final phase in Germany. There will be two semifinals and a final to decide each of the three places that complete the 24 that will play in the Euro Cup starting on June 14, 2024.
