Club Brugge Faces Ongoing Challenges in Building New Stadium

Club Brugge can look back on several wonderful years, in which it was able to acquire a dominant position within Belgian football, both sportingly and financially. But the considerably outdated Jan Breydel stadium remains a hindrance to the blue-black leg. And a solution in the stadium file is not immediately in sight.

The multiple national champion has been trying for years, more specifically since 2006, to build a new football temple. And those plans already became quite concrete. But every time there was a protest somewhere. As a result, locations had to be changed several times.

The fact that the current stadium is also shared with Cercle Brugge and therefore a solution must also be found for Groen-Zwart, obviously does not make the matter any easier. Ultimately, they seemed to have found an ideal path in 2020.

For example, Club wanted to build a new stadium on the current Olympia site, after which the current stadium would be demolished. An alternative location was then sought for Cercle. And although these plans have been worked out in concrete terms, the foundation stone is still far from being laid.

At least three more years

The construction of the new stadium continues to encounter opposition. For example, a number of local residents and other stakeholders have major questions about the mobility plan and the expected parking nuisance. Due to their protests, the much-needed permits are not being obtained.

A file that makes you despondent, but Club is not giving up for the time being. According to The newspapaer It will take at least another year and a half before the works can actually start. So a new term to look forward to.

European on Jan Breydel

In any case, Blauw-Zwart would assume that it will continue to play football in the outdated Jan Breydel stadium for at least another three years. The source mentioned is confident that the European competitions can also be completed here. However, there was doubt about this due to UEFA standards. But for the time being, a move from Bruges does not seem to be an option (yet?).
