Clashes and Injuries as Tear Gas Used on Demonstrators and Supporters in Antananarivo

On the morning of Monday, October 2, the authorities responsible for maintaining order deployed the first tear gas dispersal devices against demonstrators and supporters of the Collective of 11 candidates for the presidential election near Ambohidahy, in the capital Antananarivo .

Injuries and arrests

The Collective, led by the candidates Marc Ravalomanana, Roland Ratsiraka, Tahina Razafinjoelina, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, Jean Jacques Ratsietison, Auguste Paraina, Andry Raobelina, Hajo Andrianainarivelo, as well as some deputies, headed towards Analakely, the city center ofAntananarivowhen tear gas was deployed.

Rina Randriamasinoro, the secretary general of the TIM party, as well as a bodyguard of Marc Ravalomanana, were arrested. Candidates Andry Raobelina, Tahina Razafinjoelina and Rivo Rakotovao, national president of the HVM party, were unfortunately injured during the clashes.

They weren’t there

Furthermore, there was no trace of candidates Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, Jean-Brunelle Razafintsiandraofa and Lalaina Ratsirahonana. The three candidates were also absent during the Collective’s declaration the day before. However, as the newspaper notes Madagascar-Tribuneaccording to the HVM party, they maintain their solidarity with the Collective.

Jean-Brunelle Razafintsiandraofa would have been detained in Ikongo for personal reasons, Lalaina Ratsirahonanana would be facing health problems, and Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko would be abroad for a professional trip on behalf of the UAJ (African Judo Union). In response, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko issued a statement through its communications agency, expressing the following: “the provisional government under Rajoelina wants to blind the opposition with tear gas. It is our democracy that is crying.”
