City Residents and Organizations Collaborate to Care for Public Greenery and Recreation Spaces

More than 307 thousand square meters of public greenery, dog areas, play spaces and sports areas looked after by towns and citizens, bodies, associations, companies, condominiums, committees, as part of the ‘Take care of and adopt public greenery’ project.

“Three hundred thousand out of several million square meters of greenery and lawn areas must not seem like a small thing to us – explains the councilor for the Environment and Greenery Elena Grandi -. Every space cared for by others certainly also represents an economic saving for the Administration but above all, and this is what interests us most, it testifies to the desire of many and many to participate in the maintenance, respect, beauty and care of the property. common.

Never as in recent years have we felt citizens interested and attentive to the well-being of the city’s green areas and it is our intention to always find new ‘engagement’ formulas. I am thinking, for example, of the collaboration agreements or the teams of volunteers that we coordinated with the ‘Together for greenery’ project, to bring the gardens back to normal usability in the shortest possible time after the July storms”.

There are a total of 585 active contracts in October 2023, confirming the appreciation of this formula which since 2012 has promoted active involvement in the care of public green areas. There are two possible forms of partnership: technical collaboration (to date there are 503) and sponsorship (82 in progress).

Among the signatories, 43% are represented by condominiums that have 252 contracts underway with the Municipality of Milan: these are mainly the spaces in front of the buildings, such as tree-lined parterres and flowerbeds. Private companies are signatories of 186 contracts, often roundabouts and equipped areas; 76 concern private citizens; 61 associations and cooperatives; 10 universities and schools.

As regards the types of greenery taken care of, there are 307 parterres, 248 flowerbeds and green spaces, 20 sports areas, 4 dog areas, 4 roundabouts and 2 play areas. From 2012 to today, thanks to collaboration with private individuals it has been possible to create or redevelop dozens of equipped areas including 21 basketball courts, 7 dog areas, 8 spaces dedicated to play and even a stock sports field, a baseball field and a from rugby.
