Champions League: what does the ball look like for the group stage?

Who says great competition says exceptional ball. Since the German company, Adidas, supplied the balls to UEFA, we have been treated to some beautiful designs. Inspired by the Champions League logo which forms a ball with eight stars, the brand with the three stripes has launched its first models made up of twelve stars. First in 2001 for the Real Madrid – Bayern Munich semi-final (0-1; 2-1), then for the final between the Bavarians and Valencia CF (1-1, tab 5-4) at the San Siro Stadium in Milan. Every year, before the start of the group stage, there is a certain wait for this legendary ball with its very colorful graphics. Today’s cutting-edge technology for such an event.

This season, for each of the twelve stars of the men’s European Cup ball, there is a letter from the famous refrain “The Champions” applied “in a majestic metallic silver font”. A press release from l’UEFA when launching the season justified this choice of inspiration by “the anthems that resonate in the stadiums before the matches. The new designs pay homage to these iconic symphonies and the feelings of excitement and anticipation they inspire.” Note that the European Cup ball for women is not identical since an anthem was specially created for their competition during the 2021-2022 season.

For the men’s tournament, “visual representations of the anthem’s musical score feature purple, red and blue stars – royal colors specially selected to symbolize the nobility of the players competing for the coveted title of winner of the Champions League”.
