Caroline Garcia Opens Up about Personal Loss at the US Open

Beaten on August 29 by the Chinese Wang (6−4, 6–1) in the first round of the US Open, while she was playing big by defending a semi‐final, Caroline Garcia did not appear before the press after the meeting. She announced a little later via a press release the death of her grandmother which occurred before her entry into the running.

Guest on Sunday on the show “Stephen Time” on RMCthe French number 1 returned to this very difficult moment.

“Everyone deals with grief in a different way. My parents called me the day before my first round at the US Open and sometimes that’s a little hard to do. I knew that the US Open in singles was an important event so at the time, I didn’t ask myself the question of going home straight away. You stay a little cold and prepare for your match. But in fact, my body and especially my heart were hurt. I was very emotional and couldn’t concentrate. I thought I was getting there but there was already the stress of the US Open, I knew it was one of my last shots to qualify for the Masters. I wanted to go on the court, I knew my grandmother loved to see me play and would have wanted me to do so. It gave me the motivation to try to go all the way for her. But it was impossible. The heart and the body have their reasons that we cannot understand. After I left the singles tournament, I immediately wanted to go back to be with my family. »
