Bulgaria’s National Team Appoints Georgi Iliev as New Head Coach

Last week, BFU dismissed Mladen Krstajic, who took over the leadership of the Bulgarian national team in July 2022. Under the leadership of the Serb, Bulgaria managed to qualify for the 2024 European Championship with only two draws in six games, occupies the last place in subgroup G and can no longer qualify for the final tournament.

The contract with 55-year-old Iliev is concluded until May 2026. Since 2018, Iliev has been managing the “Cherno More” team of his hometown Varna and will perform his duties in the club until the end of this season.

In his coaching career, Iliev led teams in Bulgaria and Angola.

Former attacking midfielder Iliev played outside his homeland in Portugal, winning the national cup with Lisbon “Benfica”, as well as in Turkey and Greece. In the 1990s, he became a three-time Bulgarian champion with Sofia’s “Levski”.
