Brazilian Badminton Secures Three Medals at Pan American Games

Brazilian badminton secured two bronzes, one in women’s doubles and another in mixed, and a final in men’s duets at the Pan American Games. This Tuesday, the 24th, Juliana Vieira and Sânia Lima were defeated by twin sisters Kerry and Annie Xu, from the United States, in the semi-final of the sport, held at the Olympic Training Center, in the neighborhood of Ñuñoa, and took bronze. The score was 2-0, splits of 21/7 and 21/18. Despite the score, the Brazilian duo gave a lot of work to one of the favorites for the competition title. The biggest of the game’s many rallies lasted about four and a half minutes.

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy, they were the number 2 pair in the tournament. We knew it was going to be a game with a lot of rallies and I’m happy with our performance”, analyzed Sâmia. The women’s pair’s campaign began with a victory over Chileans Vania Díaz and Ashley Montre 2-0 (21/6, 21/8). They then beat the strong Canadian duo, Eliana-ruobing Zhang and Wen Yu Zhang 2-1 (21/9, 19/21 and 21/18), before losing the semis.

“It was going to be a difficult game from the first point. Looking at the partial, it looks like it was easy, but there was a rally with 30 beats, very long. We gave everything we had today and that’s what matters. Having the COB President here in the gym supporting us was an added incentive. I hope that the sport can win even more medals”, said Juliana, citing the presence of Paulo Wanderley in the stands.

The other bronze was guaranteed in the mixed doubles, on Tuesday night. Davi Silva and Sânia Lima, a pair in which one is 2.02m tall and the other is 1.50m, faced the Americans Vinson Chiu and Jennie Gai in the mixed doubles semi-final. They started well, winning the first set 22-20, but then lost their production and ended up defeated 2-1 (20/22, 21/16 and 21/16).

“We started well, but the game changed. We left with the defeat, but happy with the bronze medal”, said Davi.

“We had already played against them, we knew it was going to be difficult. We did our best and I thank everyone for the support”, added Sânia. Before the semi-final, they had defeated Jonathan Rivas and Diana Soto 2-1 (21/12, 22/24 and 21/14) and over Mexicans Luis Navarro and Miriam Perez 2-0 (21/15, 23/21 ).

This Tuesday morning, Fabrício Farias and Davi Silva went further and secured themselves in the final of the men’s doubles by defeating Guatemalans Lesvin Córdoba and Josué Solís Rivas, who at the Pan are defending the Team of Independent Athletes, 2-0 (21/18 , 21/16).

“It was great to reach the final because it’s a goal we’ve had for a long time. The difference for us was to put a lot of race on the court, a Brazilian brand, at the end”, said Fabrício.

The men’s pair debuted with a victory over Jamaicans Samuel Ricketts and Bradley Evans 2-0 (21/11, 21/12). Next, they passed the Americans Vinson Chiu and Joshua Yuan (21/19, 15/21 and 21/18). In the decision, on the morning of this Wednesday, the 25th, they will face the Canadians Nyl Kiyoshi Yakuta and Xingyu Dong.
