Basketball Euroleague: Better ending for Fenerbahce at FC Bayern Basketball

Fenerbahce Istanbul was the expected tough nut to crack for FC Bayern in the Basketball Euroleague. The Munich team kept the game exciting and close for a long time. In the end, however, the higher quality of the Turks prevailed.

The FC Bayern basketball players have recovered well from the heavy defeat they suffered at FC Barcelona a week ago. But it wasn’t quite enough to win against Fenerbahce Istanbul. And so they suffered their next defeat in their own stadium against another top European team. But not everything was bad in the 67:76 (38:41) against Fenerbahce Istanbul. With a slightly better three-point rate or a little more luck in the game, a win would have been possible for head coach Pablo Laso’s team.

Bonga: “We have to make better decisions”

“In the final phase we have to make better decisions. You can’t make easy mistakes against a team like that,” said world champion Isaac Bonga after the game on Magentasport. It wasn’t just for him that the home game felt like an away game again. The Fenerbahce fans may not have been in the majority in the hall, but they were significantly louder than the Bayern supporters. Nevertheless, a duel developed on equal terms with only slight advantages for the Turks.

Fenerbahce had better nerves in the crucial phase

It was a close game until halftime (38:41). Only when there was an eleven-point deficit nine and a half minutes before the end (47:58) did everything clearly speak for the 13-time Turkish champions. For the Munich team, the three-point throws in particular simply refused to fall. Although Fener didn’t have good throwing rates either, they had the match winner in Scottie Wilbekin in their ranks. With his 17 points he was by far the best scorer of the game.

Only Sylvain Francisco scored in double figures for Bayern (11 points). That was simply not enough offensively to be able to defeat a top team like Istanbul. Nick Weiler-Babb and Andreas Obst brought Bayern close to 66:68 with two important three-pointers three minutes before the end. After that, the guests had better nerves and a calmer hand when it came to finishing.
