Baseball/Softball, Marcon (Pres. FIBS): “The Olympics are the right place for this discipline” | EXCLUSIVE

Satisfaction for baseball/softball after admission to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, as evidenced by the words of FIBS President Andrea Marcon. The number one of the Italian Baseball Softball Federation gave an interview to TAG24.it, focusing on the great result obtained: “The result satisfies us very much. Congratulations first of all go to the President of the World Federation Fraccari. I know how much he worked to reach this goal. We hope that the Olympics are the right place for baseball and softball, which unfortunately continue to drop out of the Games program.”

Marcon then continued: “Returning fully for Los Angeles 2028, hoping to find confirmations for the future too, is certainly important. The problem of not including a discipline in the Olympic program concerns the number of athletes but also the facilities. Probably in Paris, not having a tradition in this discipline, they decided not to invest in a facility that they could not exploit in the years to come. I think that’s why they left us out.”

Baseball/Softball, Marcon: “Los Angeles 2028 will be a stimulus for everyone”

Subsequently, the President of FIBS also focused on the absence of baseball/softball from the Paris 2024 program. Certainly negative news for the discipline, which had returned for the Tokyo Games: “Paris could have been Rome if there weren’t had been the withdrawal of the candidacy for 2024. Perhaps also for this reason baseball/softball remained out of the Games in the London and Rio de Janeiro editions. However, the discipline is historical and truly has great appeal throughout the world. The Olympics are the right place for this sport.”

Subsequently, Marcon focused on the increase and growth of the sports movement in Italy. A fact that gives us hope in view of the American Olympics: “There has certainly been an increase in this discipline. In Tokyo we qualified with the women’s softball team. The moment is positive from a numerical point of view. We have recorded an increase in the number of members and activities. Unfortunately, the sporting results were not satisfying but starting again with the goal of Los Angeles 2028 will give new stimuli to everyone.”

Baseball/Softball, Marcon: “The qualification process will be complicated, there is a lot of competition”

In conclusion, the FIBS President focused on the possibilities of Olympic qualification for Italy. A result that would be truly significant for the Italian national team, with the hope of offering a great performance in Los Angeles: “In a certain respect, the qualification process is more complicated than winning Olympic medals. At the last Olympic Games we could certainly have had more but the competition in the world is very high.”

In fact, Italy was one of the six nations to qualify for Softball in the last Tokyo Olympics. However, the Italians’ adventure ended during the group stage, thanks to their sixth place in the standings. The gold medal instead went to Japan, which prevailed over the United States and Canada. Marcon, however, wants to look forward with confidence, also looking at the example given by the Japanese: “We are coming off fifth place at the World Cup and in terms of softball ranking we have grown a lot. I believe we will do the same in the coming months. We must work intensely, perhaps following the example of Japan. We probably have a chance to qualify and then make a good impression at the Olympics.”
