Balancing Academics and Athletics: Daniel Arancibia’s Journey to the Pan American Games

Daniel Arancibia recognizes that being a high-performance athlete and at the same time a university student is a unique challenge. Attending classes and going to training becomes an arduous task, especially considering that he resides in Lampa, which involves long trips.

Their commitment, in addition to the support of Usach and their teachers, have been fundamental in maintaining a balance between judo and classes. Something vital for her preparation for the 2023 Pan American Games, where she dreams of a medal.

The 21-year-old athlete, who debuts this weekend at the Contact Sports Center, at the National Stadium, said that he had the support of the university when he spent a month preparing in Brazil. “I’ve never had problems. I had it planned for a long time because of what I said “Now, this semester we reduced the academic load a little and focused more on training””, he assured Diario Usach.

Daniel, who entered the Usach kinesiology program through a sports quota, is looking forward to his debut, where he believes that the support of the public will be essential.

“I was at the OPEN here in Santiago that they held this year and it was very obvious that I was at home. Now I imagine it will be much better being the Pan American Games. There are many more people, I have gone to train where the venue will be and it is very nice, it is big, I have many family members who are going to see me, I am going to give my 110%, I am much better, the nervousness is always there, I visualize myself a lot in the competition, I hope to arrive in the best possible way, that the nerves do not play tricks and to be focused. It is just another championship, but we are going for the goal of a medal,” he said.

In addition to his passion for judo and his studies, Arancibia highlights the constant support of his family, in particular his older sister, who not only introduced him to judo, but has also been his manager and his greatest source of support in his sporting career.

“My older sister is like my second mother. I always have her support, because of her I entered judo, she is a teacher and because of her I entered. She always took my things with me, in many quotes like my manager. The greatest support I have in sport is her, my family in general, sometimes you are very crestfallen with little desire but they are the ones who help you continue,” he revealed.

Throughout his career, Arancibia has had the opportunity to represent Chile in various international competitions, obtaining medals in events in countries such as Argentina, Peru, and Colombia. Despite the challenges he has faced, his determination has led him to rise through the judo ranks, which fills his sporting career with satisfaction.

With the dream of a medal, the Kinesiology student Usach is already analyzing his future and the options of participating in the Olympic Games, a goal that is set for 2028.

“Being optimistic, Paris 2024 is far away, it should already have several points because it is classified by points, in some sports, by winning a gold medal in the JJPP you are classified, not in the case of Judo. I would prepare for the next Olympic cycle, it is four years and I have time, I feel that I can get there in a better way, hopefully in five more years we will be having this same conversation for an Olympics,” he concluded.
