Austria Secures Comfortable Victory Over BW Linz in Bundesliga Match

Shortly before the break, Gruber scored a double strike within 109 seconds to give the “Veilchen” a comfortable half-time lead, which Fisnik Asllani extended soon after the restart (55th). Gruber also had his legs in the game with his finish, with a precise shot into the near corner he increased his goal tally to seven goals in this Bundesliga season and is therefore first in the top scorer list.

In the table, Austria has overtaken the newcomers from Linz and, after their second win, are now tied for ninth on points ahead of the Blue-Whites from Upper Austria, who lost for the first time in four games.

Austria wanted to take the momentum from the 0-0 draw in the derby. The Linz team, who arrived with two away wins under their belt, tried to steal the edge from the home team early on. The game was less than five minutes old when two blue and white players, Marco Krainz and Danilo Mitrovic, had already received yellow cards. In particular, Mitrovic’s entry against Johannes Handl was extremely tough; referee Jakob Semler had a lot to do on his BL debut.

Double strike before break

Austria was busy pressing the guests early. After the absences of the suspended James Holland and Matthias Braunöder as well as the injured Manfred Fischer, Marvin Potzmann and Aleksandar Jukic formed the central midfield. In the Viennese’s best chance in the first half hour, Manuel Polster was unable to get past BW goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid as he rushed out of the goal (14′).

Austria remained harmless offensively for the time being. Blue-White played at eye level, Conor Noß came close to scoring a goal, and with their combined efforts the purple backline prevented the deficit (25′). But Austria had their goalscorer off duty. Gruber hammered the ball under the crossbar with his left after a pass from Dominik Fitz and, less than two minutes later, used Polster’s assist again in the style of a goalscorer. Gruber had accounted for 75 percent of all Austria goals in the Bundesliga at this point.

Asllani wins the preliminary decision

After the break, the favorites wanted to follow up. Fitz did everything right, only the finish didn’t work (47′). Asllani rewarded the Wimmer team with his first goal of the season after Schmid had parried a Gruber shot.

BW coach Gerald Scheiblehner tried to breathe new life into his team with substitutions, but Austria didn’t allow anything and had space for counterattacks. Gruber used one of these to make it 4-0 before he was allowed to end his working day. Substitute Kristijan Dobras hit the outside bar in the finish for Blue-White. After only scoring six goals in nine rounds, the Austrians were able to celebrate a landslide victory in the end.
