Sabalenka beat Maria Sakkari 6-0, 6-1 and thus confirmed her position as favorite in the women’s year-end tournament in Cancun, Mexico.

Why so smooth? She wasn’t nervous, Sakkari said after the end of the match, she just didn’t feel her game. “A very, very bad day at the office,” she stated. At least the Greek woman avoided “glasses” when she fended off three match points at 0:6, 0:5. But Sabalenka then served to zero.

Pegula with her first win ever at the WTA Finals

The American Jessica Pegula had previously celebrated a 7:5, 6:2 win against Elena Rybakina in the first match of the tournament.

Rybakina got off to a better start and served to win the set at 5:3. But then Pegula played ten of the next twelve games. Rybakina made a total of 35 errors unnecessarily – too many. “She made a few mistakes and gave up a few points too easily. Then I got my momentum,” said Pegula.

Pegula celebrated her first victory ever at the WTA Finals. In the previous two years they had lost all six group games.
