Arizona Cardinals Expected to Start Rookie QB Clayton Tune Against Browns, Kyler Murray’s Status Uncertain

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to use rookie quarterback Clayton Tune on Sunday against the Browns in Cleveland, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Coach Jonathan Gannon, however, explained that there was a possibility that Kyler Murray could start the game, recovering from surgery following a ligament injury.

“If it’s not Kyler, then it’s Clayton Tune,” Gannon said during his press conference.

Joshua Dobbs, who started the first eight games for the 1-7 Cardinals, will be relegated to a reserve role. If Murray were to start the game, Gannon said Tune would then be the backup and Dobbs would be the emergency quarterback.

“These are all scenarios that could be in play,” Gannon explained.

Gannon added that he “really” doesn’t know when he will decide who will start the game against the Browns.

“We’ll see how the week goes,” Gannon said. I like to evaluate the training week as it goes. We will make this decision closer to the match. »

Monday’s quarterback change comes after Gannon said after Sunday’s 31-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens that Dobbs would start Sunday in Cleveland. Dobbs finished the game with 208 yards passing on 25 of 37 passing attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Ravens. Dobb, however, had only 61 passing yards until about 9:20 of the fourth quarter.

Dobbs totaled 1,569 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions in his eight starts.

Whether Murray has a chance to debut in 2023 will depend on his progress this week, Gannon said, adding that Murray is “doing a good job” in training so far.
