F1 United States GP classification, with Sainz fourth and Alonso, retired
The Asturian driver started from the pit lane, like his teammate Lance Stroll, after breaking the parc ferme, in search of solutions to the problems detected in both cars since Friday. Fernando has returned to the Qatar setup and he soon realized that his AMR23 had much more performance, which led him to stage a spectacular comeback.
With six laps to go he was ninth and within reach of eighth, but his team detected a failure in the car’s rear suspension and Alonso has had to retirewith evident disappointment after culminating the worst weekend of the year for Aston Martin.
“It was a super race for us, with a great comeback and a lot of pace to have started from the pit lane. I could have finished eighth, it was a very good race. But unfortunately the car had to be retired due to damage to the floor. . It’s painful because we lacked rhythm all weekend and in the race we had a lot, but we still had to give up,” Fernando summarized after the race.

“Zero points hurt, but nothing can be done and we will concentrate next week, in Mexico,” he added Alonso, resigned. Regarding the team’s strategy, with a different car configuration for each driver, he commented that it was a consensual decision.
“It was at 50 percent, the team asked the drivers and we had no preferences, we just wanted to help the team collect as much data as possible for next weekend. It has been a team decision and now there is a lot of information to analyze in the factory. Lance and I hadn’t done many laps this weekend and were coming into the race blind. We put different settings, a test session, and we felt more competitive than in any other session this weekend. That’s good news, but we have to understand many things,” he warned.
Regarding Aston Martin’s performance throughout this year, the two-time champion has indicated that they are thinking about the 2024 car. “There are ups and downs for everyone, We started the season very well and now we are not as competitive as at the beginning. We will try to learn and help the team in the next races to understand the weaknesses of the car and the lack of progress, to try to be stronger next year,” he concluded.
