Alexander Zverev Advances to Quarterfinals of ATP Tournament in Vienna

Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has reached the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Vienna. The German number one clearly had the upper hand against Briton Cameron Norrie on Wednesday evening with a score of 6:2, 6:4.

Zverev, who had defeated local hero Sebastian Ofner in two sets at the start, withstood Norrie’s serve right from the start and grabbed the first break with a strong backhand stroke. He mastered his own tasks brilliantly: 81 percent of his first serves were correct, five aces followed, and after 37 minutes Zverev secured the first set.

Zverev remained dominant in the second round as well, with a great slice he managed the next break to make it 2-1. Finally, the tenth in the world rankings converted his first match point after 1:21 hours of play.

The 26-year-old from Hamburg is also fighting for more points in Austria’s capital to qualify for the ATP season finale of the best eight professionals in Turin. He is currently in seventh place in the “Race”. After Zverev failed to make it through the first round in Tokyo and Shanghai, he can now collect more important points in the quarter-finals. In this Zverev will meet third-seeded Andrej Rublew or Matteo Arnaldi from Italy.

For Daniel Altmaier, the Vienna chapter has already ended on Wednesday. The out-of-form 25-year-old from Kempen lost his opening duel against French veteran Gael Monfils 4:6, 4:6.
