At 10 a.m. this morning, the Girondins U17, U19 and National 3 teams are training under the sun on the Haillan Sports Plain. Nearby, Patrice Lair’s team, which is playing this evening in D1 Arkema against Montpellier, is setting up its tactics. But it was Albert Riera that the supporters came to observe. The Spanish coach raises the hopes of Girondins de Bordeaux fans who still want to believe in a comeback and a rise to Ligue 1 at the end of the championship.

The Spanish technician arrives before his players on the training ground. He briefs and discusses at length with his staff and his deputies. He gives his instructions clearly.

The players arrive in groups a little after 10 a.m. and gather around Albert Riera. The Spanish coach starts his session with a speech which lasts around 5 minutes. The players do not do the light jogging in front of the railings to greet the supporters who have come to encourage them as usual. Training therefore begins with a pass-the-column game on a reduced perimeter. Riera talks a lot to his players in this exercise and gives instructions. The players are separated into two groups. Note the presence of Tebili, Grothe and Vetro. De Lima is also present. Yoann Barbet and Vital Nsimba are there. The 9 Girondins internationals are absent.

Gérard Lopez in sight

Gérard Lopez, president and owner of the club, arrives during the session. He greets the journalists at the edge of the pitch and positions himself as close as possible to his players. He will remain there throughout the session, joined by Admar Lopes, the sports director. The two men spoke at length while observing the players and staff training.

A second cross-sectional exercise followed by acceleration is offered to the players. The coach works on physical intensity at the same time as technique on the long game.

Aliou Badji gets angry

Finally, a third exercise which lasts 30 minutes concludes this training. This is an opposition on a quarter of the field. Grothe, Sissokho and Tebili stand out for their fast play in front of goal. On the contrary, Aliou Badji who curses at Nsimba over a game action. He is criticized by coach Riera: “We don’t have time to talk Badji”. This does not calm down the Senegalese attacker who continues to complain. Riera comes to talk to him, Barbet too. The game resumes. Images and videos of the training are available on the WebGirondins Instagram account.

During this opposition between the two teams, Albert Riera acts more as an observer. He concludes his session with an on-field debriefing with his players which lasts a good 10 minutes. The players leave the field without much enthusiasm despite the encouragement of the supporters. In the end, it was not with this session that we were able to observe a liberated group. The players rather gave the impression of having a lead cap on their heads. The latter then signed autographs to the supporters present with great availability. This is only the beginning of the Riera era, the task promises to be immense for the new coach of the Girondins de Bordeaux.
