Ajax Striker’s Unintentional Collision Leaves RKC Goalkeeper Unconscious: Match Abandoned

Ajax headed to Waalwijk with a lot of pressure on matchday 7 in the Eredivisie. Only a win against the mid-table could avert the Amsterdam crisis.

That assignment also seemed to go well, as Ajax took the lead three times in North Brabant. But with the score 2-3, the match was startled ten minutes before the end by an incident involving RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen.

During a match, the goalkeeper collided with Ajax striker Brian Brobbey, who unintentionally hit Vaessen on his left temple. The goalkeeper then immediately passed out.

Great panic quickly arose around Vaessen’s condition, who immediately received medical assistance on the field. The RKC players shielded their goalkeeper and emergency services.

Vaessen was resuscitated on the spot. He was then carried off the field and taken to hospital. Frank van Mosselveld, technical director at RKC, reported to the NOS that Vaessen had recovered while being carried off the field.

“But he didn’t know where he was. Etienne was knocked out for a while. The medical people immediately started resuscitation, but it doesn’t look like a heart problem.”

The RKC players reacted very upset, including fellow countryman Dario Van den Buijs, who left the field in tears. After consultation it was decided not to continue playing.
