A Battle of Payrolls: Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers Set for 2023 World Series

The 2023 World Series will feature the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers.

It’s seen as something of a Cinderella story for both clubs. Neither was considered a favorite before the start of the season, as both were outside the top 10 in terms of World Series betting odds.

But one thing they don’t have in common is the amount they spend on their players. The Rangers’ payroll is $251 million, and the team is paying its highest-paid player more than $35 million this season. The Diamondbacks’ payroll is $119 million, and the team’s highest-paid player makes $11.6 million.

The Rangers’ payroll is more than twice that of the Diamondbacks.

The Rangers had the fourth-highest payroll in Major League Baseball this season, while the Diamondbacks had the 21st highest, out of 30 teams.

Texas shortstop Corey Seager earns the triple of Ketel Marte, Arizona’s highest-paid player. The Diamondbacks don’t have a single player with a salary above $12 million this season, while the Rangers have five players making at least that amount.

Unlike other American professional sports like the NFL and NBA, in MLB there can be significant variances in team payrolls. For example, the team with the highest payroll in the 2023 MLB season was the New York Mets at $343 million, while the Oakland Athletics spent just $62 million – the average payroll of the league this season was $165 million, according to Spotrac. The teams with the highest payrolls, however, pay a luxury tax.

The Rangers have never won the World Series, and the Diamondbacks have won it once, in 2001. The Rangers are considered slight favorites to win the World Series with winning odds of -170 at DraftKings DKNG,
-2,80%
Sportsbook, which carries an implied probability of 63%.
