8-year-old Voghera Athlete Anna Campora Wins Gold at World Dwarf Games

VOGHERA Great satisfaction, on a global level, for Voghera sport. The municipal administration wanted to pay homage this morning to the world athletics champion in the 40 meters specialty, Anna Campora, 8 years old, Italian representative of Atletica Iriense, who participated in the World Dwarf Games, world championships dedicated to achondroplastic people, scheduled in Cologne last month.

The event involved over 500 athletes from 22 nations who competed in various sports, such as football, basketball, volleyball, badminton and athletics. Anna Campora was received in the town hall, together with the coach Tamara Nespoli, by the councilor with responsibility for sport Giuseppe Giovanetti, who awarded them a certificate and a commemorative medal. Anna’s family was also present at today’s meeting in the Council Room.

The great satisfaction came in the 40 meters specialty: Anna Campora demonstrated all her qualities, crossing the finish line first and therefore winning the title of world champion. She, the athlete, also became a protagonist in the 20 meter speed race, coming fifth, and in the ball throw in which she climbed to the third step of the podium. In addition to athletics, Anna competed in swimming, winning the silver medal in the 25 meter freestyle.

“The Cologne experience was really beautiful, – says Anna Campora – at the beginning I was scared and intimidated by all those people and by the solemnity of the event. After the first race, the ball throw, however, I saw that I could do it and that it was fun to meet and get to know athletes from all over the world. The 40 meter race was truly unforgettable. I was nervous, and it was also raining, but I gave it my all: when I realized I had crossed the finish line first, it was a real joy and I ran towards my sister on the sidelines to celebrate. In addition to the medals, I bring home a lot of positive energy and I hope to be able to compete again in 4 years at the next World Dwarf Games to be held in Australia.”

“Sport is synonymous with commitment, dedication and also great satisfaction – underlines the Sports Councilor Giuseppe Giovanetti -. It was an enormous pleasure to receive Anna this morning, her coach, her family, and organize this moment to celebrate an important and noteworthy success, especially for her young age. Anna brought the name of Voghera to the top of the athletic panorama, and we can only be proud of this.”
