The Schalke team was able to stop the crash. The relegated Bundesliga team, which was in danger of relegation, managed to win against the top team Hannover 96. Hertha BSC and leaders FC St. Pauli also win their home games with a crime-worthy ending.

FC Schalke 04 has returned to the fight to stay in the second division. In coach Karel Geraerts’ home debut, the traditional club won against Hannover 96 3-2 (1-0) on Saturday and was able to reduce the gap to a non-relegation place to two points. Bryan Lasme (42nd minute), Lino Tempelmann (71st) and Kenan Karaman (77th) scored Schalke’s goals after four defeats in a row. Hannover missed a step up after goals from Enzo Leopold (52nd) and Marcel Halstenberg (90th/penalty kick).

S04 coach Geraerts swapped six positions compared to the 3-0 defeat in Karlsruhe. Against the in-form guests of coach Stefan Leitl, Schalke managed to be on equal terms in front of 62,271 spectators. It looked like a goalless half, but then Schalke struck: Lasme got to the ball after Hannover couldn’t clear defense leader Halstenberg. The Frenchman easily scored to take the lead 1-0.

As well as Schalke had defended in the first half, the S04 defense was just as flawed after the break. The result was the equalizer by Leopold, who was able to calmly shoot the ball into the goal from almost 14 meters to make it 1-1.

The hosts were wobbling after conceding a goal. The Schalke double strike was all the more surprising: Tempelmann and Karaman ensured an actually reassuring 3-1. A converted penalty from Halstenberg came too late for the promotion contender (90th).

Hertha BSC – SC Paderborn 3:1 (2:0)

Hertha BSC inflicted their first defeat on SC Paderborn since the beginning of September and overtook Ostwestfalen, who had the same number of points, in the table. The Berliners won 3-1 (2-0) at home and celebrated their fifth win of the season. Haris Tabakovic (11th minute/54th) with his goals eight and nine and Jonjoe Kenny (45th + 3) scored for the capital. Florent Muslija (47th) scored the next goal in front of 35,832 spectators. Hertha captain Toni Leister was sent off shortly before the end with a yellow-red card (86th).

The opening phase belonged to the Berliners, who developed a lot of goal threat through Fabian Reese and Tabakovic. The Swiss striker finally used his third chance to take the deserved lead. As a result, Hertha fell behind and Paderborn took control of the game. When both teams were almost in the locker room, Kenny increased the score out of nowhere.

Hertha quickly recovered from Muslija’s shock goal after the restart. Once again, the Berlin dream duo caused a sensation in the Paderborn penalty area when Tabakovic artistically completed a cross from Reese. It was Tabakovic’s fourth brace this season. At Paderborn, the substitution of ex-national player Max Kruse had largely no effect.

FC St. Pauli – Karlsruher SC 2:1 (0:1)

FC St. Pauli has regained the lead in the table for the time being with a last-minute win against Karlsruher SC. Fabian Hürzeler’s team won 2-1 (0-1) in front of 29,125 spectators in the Millerntor Stadium and thus moved past Fortuna Düsseldorf. Johannes Eggestein (80th minute) and Philipp Treu (90th + 3) scored for St. Pauli. Former Pauli professional Igor Matanovic (43rd) scored for KSC.

St. Pauli tried to build up the game in a controlled manner, but did not develop enough of a real goal threat. Oladapo Afolayan (5th minute) posed no problems for Karlsruhe keeper Patrick Drewes with his low shot from distance, while on the other side Fabian Schleusener (8th) was denied by Nikola Vasilj, who reacted brilliantly. The home team became more dominant, St. Pauli’s captain Jackson Irvine (33′) couldn’t get the ball past Drewes from point-blank range after Connor Metcalfe put it down. Then the KSC struck: After Schleusener’s cross, Marvin Wanitzek didn’t get the ball decisively, but the ex-Hamburg player Matanovic didn’t give Vasilj a chance.

Karlsruhe, who played confidently, concentrated primarily on defense in the second half. St. Pauli struggled to get back into the game. Substitutes Elias Saad (63′) and Danel Sinani (72′) initially failed, but Eggestein equalized after a cross from Metcalfe. A goal from Simon Zoller (80th) was disallowed because of a previous foul. Treu scored the winner with a powerful shot from the backcourt after a corner.
