1st City of Schio Meeting – Inclusive and Unified Sport: Special Olympics Italia Hosts European City of Sport 2023

Saturday 21 and 22 October 2023, on the occasion of “Schio European City of Sport 2023”, organized by the Association “Special Olympics Italia”, took place on “1st City of Schio Meeting – Inclusive and unified sport”, with the inauguration ceremony preceded by Torch Run – the path of the Olympic torch which wound through the streets of Schio, preceded by the Lamborghini Huracan of the State Police. According to the international protocol defined as LETR. (Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics) the management of the Torch Run is carried out in each country by the police forces, guarantors and guardians of the values ​​of justice and inclusion represented by the Olympic symbolism: in Italy for years this initiative has been carried out by the State Policewhich takes care of it through its volunteer torchbearers.

The event also took place inside the Civic Theater of Schio with the reading of the athlete’s oath by the paralympic gymnast Alice Beccari, and saw the European Flag, the Italian Flag and the Special Olympics Flag paraded.

Demonstration activities were carried out over the two days dedicated to the event judo, karate, competitions artistic gymnastics ed a basketball quadrangular.

Approximately 150 athletes with disabilities, 30 technicians and 40 volunteers. Special Olympics, in fact, is the most widespread international program they participate in 180 countries in the world, thanks to which over 4,500,000 athletes with disabilities daily take important steps towards real social inclusion through the regular practice of a sporting discipline, simultaneously building a fundamental path of growth and individual autonomy.

After the naming of the Inclusive Park after Eunice Kennedy, which will take place next November, the Meeting will end with the “XIX Convention Regionale Special Olympics Veneto” on November 25th at the Civic Theater of Schio.
