Head Coach Herbert and Captain Schröder clash at the Basketball World Cup. The coach jokes, but does not rule out further consequences.

National basketball coach Gordon Herbert does not want to publicly discuss the further consequences of the dispute with his captain Dennis Schröder.

“We will clarify this internally,” said Herbert in Okinawa, Japan, when asked specifically whether another conversation or consequences for the 29-year-old were necessary. The coach did not explicitly rule this out. Playmaker Schröder clashed with the head coach during a break in a clear 100:71 in the intermediate round of the World Cup over co-favorite Slovenia.

“Sit down,” Herbert yelled at Schröder and then grabbed his arm. But Schröder stopped and countered the words of the national coach: “Don’t talk to me like that.” Herbert initially left the captain on the bench after the heated time-out and brought the young Justus Hollatz into the game. When asked how he settled the conflict with Schröder on the bench, Herbert replied: “I substituted him.”

“We found each other well again”

Schröder and teammate Daniel Theis had previously had heated discussions during the break. “Daniel and Dennis discussed their Braunschweig youth time. We got back together well. It’s all good,” Herbert joked on “Magentasport”. The German team travels from Japan to Manila on Monday, where the finals with games from the quarterfinals onwards begin on Tuesday. Germany is challenged again on Wednesday.

Above all, Schröder saw the dispute with Theis as harmless. “Daniel and I have known each other since we were children. If there’s something to discuss, I’ll talk to him immediately. And he can do that to me too. That’s what sets us apart, everyone can talk to everyone and shit on,” said the captain, who excelled in sport with 24 points and ten assists.
