Yumeji Tsuzuki’s Journey: From Bronze Medal Victory to Tokyo Olympics and Beyond

Tsurigasaki Coast, Chiba Prefecture. Two years ago, Yumeji Tsuzuki won a bronze medal in this sea, where the surfing competition at the Tokyo Olympics was held.

“My frustration was probably stronger because I wanted to win the gold medal.”

“I’ve never felt any pressure,” he says, but the Olympics were different. In the first round, I came in last place. My desire to meet expectations was in vain.

“I guess I was nervous, after all. But when I saw judo player Uta Abe win the gold medal on TV, I got courage. I just wanted to impress the people watching!” It made me feel better. Maybe that’s why I was able to concentrate on surfing.”

Tsuzuki is completely defeated and wins the repechage match. In the semifinals, she lost to Carissa Moore (USA), but she showed the most concentration and won the bronze medal. After she finished her performance, she burst into tears and burst out with joy.

“I am filled with gratitude to my family who have always supported me.”

Tsuzuki is known for his powerful riding, but he is trying a new style in order to win a ticket to the Paris Olympics.

“Surfing deals with nature, so I am conscious of honing my ability to not only read the waves but also feel the ocean.The challenge is to express suppleness and beauty while utilizing my characteristic power. ”
