“Was the best TV series of this year until now. Far. The hardest cancellation in years,” tweeted Robert Kirkman throwing (metaphorical) tomatoes at HBO for this decision. «It was a great series. I don’t even look the basketball and I loved her,” Jason Blum tweeted instead. To write these dissatisfied comments are two authoritative voices, given that Kirkman and Blum are both well-known producers, but numerous fans were equally disappointed by the choice of cancel the TV series Winning Time – Rise of the Lakers dynasty.

Winning Time: How many seasons are there

Winning Time – The rise of the Lakers dynasty is an HBO series which, as the title suggests, tells the story of the magical decade in which i Los Angeles Lakers they entered the legend of world basketball. In Italy the second season it came out exclusively on August 28th su Sky e in streaming solo su NOW.

Winning Time 2 focuses in particular on the period immediately following the 1980 and 1984 finals, recounting the rivalry that existed at that time both between teams and between players. The series is based on the book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman, sports writer. In the cast of season 2 there are, among others, John C. Reilly, Quincy Isaiah, Solomon Hughes, Sean Patrick Small, Jason Clarke and Jason Segel.

Well, the finale of the second season at this point it becomes the finale of the entire series. A decision which, as mentioned, generated a certain dissatisfaction: the final episode in fact leaves a door clearly open to a third seasonwhich however will not be done.

Why Winning Time was cancelled

The showrunner, executive producer, writer and co-creator of the series, Max Borenstein, commented on the cancellation with a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) saying: «It’s not the ending we had in mind. But we only have gratitude and love.”

As reported by Deadline, the second season of the series, which was released in the United States on August 6, attracted 629,000 total viewers on its debut day. The release of the first season, in March 2022, was welcomed by 901,000 people.

A month ago Pearlman himself, the author of the book on which the series is based, wrote about X that the future of the series was at risk: «We need viewers», he had tweeted in a decidedly eloquent way. Francesca Orsi, head of drama at HBO, also said in an interview that the network was evaluating the relationship between number of viewers and budget in relation to various TV series, including Winning Time.

The decision of cancel Winning Time after two seasonsin short, is evidently due to the decline in viewers which for HBO was such as not to justify the budget necessary to create the third season.
